about
The sophomore single God Speed from Damu the Fudgemunk's KPM Crate Diggers series album, "Conversation Peace" is a memorable collaboration between the DC native and Los Angeles legend Blu. The producer and rapper have a solid history working together and more recently made significant noise with the full-length Ground and Water in 2019. For Blu fans this familiar territory is still full of surprises. God Speed is easily in the tradition of Blu's reputation for high-quality output and thought-provoking lyricism. A Blu fan in his own right, Damu the Fudgemunk knew in advance that this music was ideal for the rapper. Damu was captivated in the studio when he discovered the main sample after hours of exploring KPM's vast library in real-time. The string composition provided a great sense of a power and emotion that led the producer to title the work "God Speed". In fact, when Damu presented the track to Blu, the only direction given was the two words God Speed. Damu stated, "I knew Blu would know exactly what to do with this!". The end result is classic material from Blu's opening hook to his first bar all the way to Damu the Fudgemunk's closing scenes of drum rolls and dramatic textures. Blu makes an appearance on Conversation Peace twice and the two make it very difficult to chose a favorite moment. At this stage in their respective careers, the two continue to raise the bar from below the heavens to as close to god as they can reach.
lyrics
You fucking with the gods
The sun, moon and stars
The third rock is ours
The next stop is Mars
No rest stops or pause
Naw, the best got this far
It’s our job to go further
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, look out world, look out world, we taking over
Scientific, my time rhythmic
Mind designed like a shiny prism
Psychic vision, psych the system
Punk and psych rock, rock my system
I’m a jazz guy, except I couldn’t be that fly
My rap life baptised like
Christ, trying to be more Christ-like
Godly, you can see the light
Moving through the night, like the moon and the star
Guiding the wisemen that come from afar
God in your eyes, I don’t care who you are
How dare you, who dared you to cross
The G. O., you just ordinary people
Who ordinarily wouldn’t dare to be evil
But here we go, down a six feet hole
To eternity, burn with me slow, hell no
You fucking with the gods
The sun, moon and stars
The third rock is ours
The next stop is Mars
No rest stops or pause
Naw, the best got this far
It’s our job to go further
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, look out world, look out world, we taking over
You fucking with the gods
The sun, moon and stars
The third rock is ours
The next stop is Mars
No rest stops or pause
Naw, the best got this far
It’s our job to go further
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, we taking over
Look out world, look out world, look out world, we taking over

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
